What New Members Can Expect

We are so excited to welcome you to our chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR)! Whether you are a new member or considering joining, here’s a helpful guide to what you can expect when attending meetings.

Meeting Details

  • When: Second Saturday of each month (September–May)

  • Time: 10:00 a.m.

  • Where: Guntersville

Most meetings last about 1 - 1.5 hours, depending on the program and business agenda.

What Happens at a DAR Meeting?

DAR meetings are a blend of patriotism, fellowship, and service. While each chapter has its own personality, most meetings follow a similar structure:

Typical Meeting Flow:

  1. Call to Order by the Chapter Regent

  2. Opening Rituals, which often include: Invocation (prayer)Pledge of AllegianceThe American’s Creed, Preamble to the Constitution, National Anthem, and Pledge to the Flag of Alabama

  3. Introductions of Guests and New Members

  4. Officer and Committee Reports

  5. Program or Guest Speaker (history, education, community service, etc.)

  6. Announcements

  7. Closing and Adjournment

DAR meetings are designed to be respectful, structured, and meaningful, while still maintaining a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

DAR Traditions & Etiquette

DAR has a long-standing tradition of honoring patriotism and respectful conduct.

  • Members typically stand during opening exercises, including the Pledge and invocation.

  • Meetings follow basic parliamentary procedure (similar to Robert’s Rules of Order).

  • Courtesy, respect, and friendliness are key values at every gathering.

What Should I Wear?

Attire for DAR meetings is generally business or business-casual, but can vary slightly depending on the meeting.

Recommended Attire:

  • Dress, skirt, or dress slacks

  • Blouse or top with a jacket or cardigan

  • Pant suits or coordinated outfits

Official guidance notes that “dress for DAR chapter meetings varies from business dress to casual, depending on the type of meeting.”

More formal guidance suggests:

  • Dresses, skirts, or slacks with a jacket are most appropriate

  • If wearing the DAR insignia (pin), attire should be more polished

Simple rule: When in doubt, choose something neat, polished, and comfortable.

DAR Insignia (Pins)

  • Members may wear their official DAR pin at meetings.

  • The insignia is typically worn on the left side.

  • It represents your lineage connection and membership. Something to wear with pride!

Atmosphere & Culture

  • Meetings are welcoming and friendly. You will never be expected to know everything right away.

  • New members are encouraged to:

    • Ask questions

    • Get involved in committees

    • Participate at their own comfort level

Your first meeting may feel a little formal, but don’t worry! You’ll quickly learn the flow, and most importantly, you’ll find a group of women who are passionate about history, service, and community.
